In what has to be the most unlikely way to form a band, Dylan Trees must owe it up to fate.  We’ll start there tonight in the Krush Lounge.  This talented group of young musicians are blazing the trail in search of a new sound, a unique sound, their own sound.  Solid writing coupled with invisible boundries is a good recipe for a fresh, fearless sound.  This is what we get from LA based Dylan Trees.  The crew were making their way down south to LA after their first tour to the Great Northwest when we able to get them to stop in.  Click on the links below to watch videos of the band in studio.

Luke Byron is as local as it gets.  He grew up in Templeton and is the son of Niels & Bimmer Udsen, owners of Castoro Cellars.  Luke grew up in the heart of Paso Robles wine country.  He was influenced by the amazing musicians who would be at his house practicing to play live shows at the winery.  After a great experience at Chico State, Luke is out with his first full length CD “Circle The Sun.”

Tonight I pay tribute to “The Man Behind The Drums,” Levon Helm.  I wanted to take a different approach than to just play a bunch of his famous songs and songs of The Band and his associated acts.  I wanted to play songs that were performed by some of my favorite artists who were deeply influenced by Levon and The Band.

I think it’s the highest honor bestowed on any artist when that artist influences generations of musicians.  It’s ironic to me that the band with the plain name “The Band” was one of the most influential bands of several generations.  Nothing fancy, nothing “high-concept,” and no gimmicks, The Band was just a band that played great music.

Stoney LaRue “The Weight”

Without a doubt, “The Weight” was the most cited, played song in the media over the past week since the passing of Levon Helm.  Perhaps the most known of all the classics.  Stoney LaRue, a gifted Oklahoma native, who’s style of Red Dirt country is deeply seeded in the 60s and 70s Southern Rock and roots sounds of bands like The Band.  Here he closes his live show at the historic Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth.  It’s a venue and live recording that every aspiring Texas, Oklahoma artist strives for.  It’s the Grand Ol’ Opry of Texas.

Elton John “Levon”

Released in 1971, Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics for “Levon” and named the title character after Levon Helm.  Even though the story in the song is not about Levon Helm, Bernie and Elton were huge fans of The Band in those days.  Also interesting, according to Wikipedia, Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, named their son “Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John”, in part as he was born on Christmas Day 2010 (as Levon was born on Christmas Day in the song).

Band of Heathens “Hurricane” and “One More Song”

“Hurricane” was recorded by Levon Helm and appeared on his 1980 “American Son” album.  It took on a whole new life sadly after Hurricane Katrina.  The Band of Heathens, I believe, is a modern day “Band,” anchored in roots rock, southern rock, country, folk and soul.  Each member is heavily influenced by The Band and Levon Helm.

In fact, so much so, they wrote a song the day after he died and sent out a letter about it.  This was recorded in the parking lot of a gig in Little Rock, Levon’s birth-state of Arkansas, the night after he died, just last Friday.  It was included in a tribute to him that night in their show.

Phish “Look Out Cleveland”

Phish and other so called “Jam Bands” are an extension of the great jam bands of the era in which The Band was so influential.  Phish often cites bands like The Band, the Grateful Dead, and Little Feat as critical to their development.  Phish is known to pull out great cover songs for various occasions and on a cold, rainy night in Cleveland, June of 2010, they paid tribute with The Band’s “Look Out Cleveland.”  This song appears on The Band’s second self-titled album, known as the “Brown Album.”

Robert Earl Keen “The Man Behind The Drums”

This is the first song I thought of when I heard about Levon Helm.  It is on Robert Earl Keen’s 2009 “The Rose Hotel” album.  As he describes in this clip, from the October 2010 Austin City Limits performance, he was inspired after visiting the famed Woodstock area of New York.  Woodstock became Helm’s home in 1967 after touring with Bob Dylan and playing music with Dylan there as a studio musician.

Popular acoustic guitarist Martin Paris joins me in the Krush Lounge this week.  Martin grew up on the Central Coast and lives in Paso Robles with his family.  He’s balanced a busy musical schedule with 25 years at UPS.  He is a tasting room favorite as well as a local concert series regular.  Martin is my first music only, instrumentalist on the Krush Lounge.

This massive collection of music was released back in January.  There are several forms of it available including a 2 CD release at Starbucks, a 4 CD release of 73 songs, or download it to get 76 songs.  Of course, we also recommend stopping by our newest sponsor, Boo Boo Records, and getting a copy.  All of the artist worked pro-Bono on this project to support the Amnesty International cause of human rights.  Artist from all genres make up the collection of Dylan’s most popular to rarest songs.

Brett Dennen “You Ain’t Going Nowhere”

Northern California native and former UC Santa Cruz Banana Slug lends his unique voice to this classic.  Written in 1967 in Woodstock, NY, this song was recorded many times over the years.  Released by The Byrds before Dylan recorded it and even became a Country hit in 1989 by Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Mariachi El Bronx “Love Sick”

This cut is a later cut from Dylan.  It was released on his 1997 album “Time Out of Mind.”  The song is performed here by Mariachi El Bronx which is a mariachi themed spin off of the LA based hard core punk band “The Bronx.”  This band appears at the Blacklake Golf Resort’s “Cinqo De Mayo” festivities with Los Lobos and fellow punk band “X.”  That show is actually set for Sunday afternoon May 6th.

Michael Franti & Spearhead “Subterranean Homesick Blues”

As a child of the Mtv generation, this song may have been my first exposure to Bob Dylan.  I vividly remember seeing him stand in place and roll off cue cards with these lyrics in the music video.  Franti, a Bay area star, does it justice with his reggae flavored treatment here.

Sting “Girl From The North Country”

One of Dylan’s earliest songs and most influential, Sting covers “Girl From The North Country” and adds his name to a list of artists who’ve done so that is too long to give here.  It was written after Dylan’s first trip to Europe in 1962.  The “girl” in the song has never been clearly identified and remains a source of debate among fans.

Johnny Cash w/The Avett Brothers “One Too Many Mornings”

Producer Rick Ruben started with the 1969 Cash recording of this song and asked the Avett Brothers to add harmonies, they eventually added more with a verse too.  I’m obviously a Cash fan but I’m also interested in everything the Avett Brothers touch.  They seem to be ahead of the curve all the time.  At one point, Cash and Dylan recorded a version together that was never released and Cash recorded it with Waylon Jennings as well.

Pete Seeger & Rivertown Kids “Forever Young”

92-year old Pete Seeger contributes the appropriately titled “Forever Young.”  Coming from a man of Seeger’s stature the wise words of this song are even more comforting.  I didn’t know until I was researching this that Rod Stewart’s 1988 “Forever Young” is technically a different song.  However, it’s so similar that Dylan and Stewart agreed to shared royalties rather than deal with copyright issues.

Adele “To Make You Feel My Love (Live)”

We know all Adele needs is her voice and a piano.  And now, throw in Dylan’s words, and it’s game over.  This is a live version of another more recent classic from 1997.  It was recorded by Adele here on public radio in Philadelphia.  Garth Brooks had a #1 Country hit with it in 1997 and both he and Dylan received Grammy nominations.  Adele first recorded it on her “19″ album.

Dave Matthews Band “All Along The Watchtower (Live)”

I saved the rocker for last.  DMB starts light and low on this and raises into a crescendo of angst and energy.  Written in 1967, the famous Jimi Hendrix version was released just 6 months after the original.  This song was also written in Woodstock, NY as Dylan was recovering from a motorcycle accident and took an interest in the Bible.  It’s some of his first Biblical influenced writing as as its believed the watchtower references come from the Book of Isaiah.

I get band suggestions all the time.  The band we feature tonight is one that I’ve heard about as much as any other in the local area.  Although I’ve heard of them and seen them in passing as they set up or tear down, I had not actually heard them until just this past week.  The Ragged Jubilee is a collection of local artists that have played just about every festival or club in town.

They are on the verge of releasing their second full length studio album called “In The Valley.”  A CD release party is set for SLO Brew Friday, tomorrow if you’re listening on Thursday, you missed it if you’re listening to the encore version Sunday night.  But they return to the Central Coast next Saturday April 14th to play the Pozo Saloon for the first time opening up at the Pozo Stampede, a Country festival.

They have a serious sound.  Blues, soulful, rootsy.  And, they are serious about the music.

Spring has sprung and while the showers linger the music is pouring like a large winter storm.  Fresh from my musical excursion to Austin, Texas with Hope Family Wines, I have collected 8 titles to share with you tonight.  Some are from my SXSW experience, some are not.  First some familiar artists with new songs then new songs from new artists.

John Mayer “Shadow Days”

After finishing work on his latest album, John was faced with serious news and is dealing with a serious vocal problem.  He’s still suffering from the granuloma in his throat.  The same thing caused his extensive vocal rest in 2011. His first tour in two years this year was canceled.  His new album “Born and Raised” will be released as planned by Columbia Records on May 22.  Thankfully, he was able to complete it so we have the music while he heals.

Brandi Carlile “That Wasn’t Me”

The first new single from Brandi’s 4th studio record is out now and she has released a new live music collection. The studio album is named after the studio it was recorded in “Bear Creek,” in Seattle. It will be in stores June 5th. The live album release, called “Live At Benaroya Hall With The Seattle Symphony” is available now. Active since 2004, this young talented singer is very prolific, with several EPs to her name as well as the studio and live albums.

Norah Jones “Happy Pills”

Norah has a new album due May 1st and has just booked a show at the Santa Barbara Bowl on August 7th. Tickets are on sale this weekend. “…Little Broken Heart” is the name of the new album being produced by EDM star Danger Mouse. It is just her 5th studio album since breaking out nearly 10 years ago. Norah has sold records in the millions and millions, tours consistently, and is a 10-time Grammy award winner.

Eric Hutchinson “Watching You Watch Him”

Several of this talented DC-area native’s songs are on the Krush, most notably, “OK, It’s Alright With Me,” and “Rock and Roll.” His first national break came On September 15, 2008, he performed “Rock and Roll” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He’s toured with all sorts of big name stars. This is the first single from his new album “Moving Up Living Down” out April 17th. He’s known as an exciting live performer as well.

Gotye “Eyes Wide Open”

Here is another great example of the talent and unique sound of Gotye. This is an album cut from his breakout “Making Mirrors” album. It’s the song he did recently on Jimmy Kimmel. I don’t know if it’s actually the “next single” but we want to play it anyway on the Krush. Wikipedia explains the name “Gotye” is derived from “Gaultier” (or “Gautier” or “Gauthier”,) the French equivalent of “Wouter” (“Walter” in English.) His real name is Wouter “Wally” De Backer.

Delta Spirit “California”

I always take notice of songs with California in the title, for better or worse. This time for better as we introduce the band Delta Spirit to the Krush. This San Diego band has been at it since 2005 with a collection of EPs and full-length studio albums. Their most recent self-titled release is out now and features this song. Considered alt-folk-blues-rock or some hybrid of those elements, we’re glad to bring them onto the Krush.

Imagine Dragons “It’s Time”

This Vegas based indie pop band was making noise as the “it” band at SXSW in Austin this year. After forming in just 2009, winning various battles of the bands and regional contests in Las Vegas, they signed their major label record deal just last November. They barely had time to release a few EPs and this cut is now breaking nationally from their “Continued Silence EP” released in February of this year. The band has also honed their live chops at all the major Vegas casinos.

Miike Snow “Paddling Out”

That’s Miike with two i’s. And it’s not a person but a Swedish indie pop band formed in 2007. This band has a unique mix of EDM (electronic dance music) and real, emotional songwriting and singing. One of the places I hear hip, new music is when the roadies put on music in between sets as they set up and tear down. The PA crews always know the “next” band or sound and often have great taste in music. This band was the band all the roadies were jamming while tearing down and setting up endless sets of music at SXSW.

We really kicked it up a notch at SXSW this year with Hope Family Wines.  Austin Hope, Joel Peterson, and I broadcasted from an amazing steakhouse called Sullivan’s right downtown in the heart of the SXSW madness in Austin, Texas.  We had an amazing array of guest taking time out of their busy SXSW schedules to stop by.  What happened, by accident, was magical.  Artists starting showing up late and then pooling up around the same time.  But with Hope Family Wine flowing and great food from Sullivan’s we created kind of an oasis for the artists.  They all enjoyed the relaxed vibe and enjoyed taking in each others performances.  For us, it was a couple of days to never forget.

Band Of Heathens “Handbags & Gladrags”

BOH released an amazing amount of music this past Tuesday.  The “Double Down Live In Denver” collection is 2 CDs, 2 DVDs!  Plus, get the deluxe on line package and you can download 2 EPs.  On these EPs are covers, 1 all Grateful Dead covers, the other covers from various artists.  It is on this EP you’ll find “Handrags & Gladrags,” a song I can’t get enough of and had never heard before.  It’s been around since the early 70s and was written for Manfred Mann. It’s well known in England as it has been covered by tons of artists including Rod Stewart.  It was adopted as the official theme song of the British version of the TV show “The Office.”

Kris Gruen “Morning Glory”

There is new music coming from the Vermont native this year.  Kris is looking to be out in California later this year as well.

Charlie Mars “I Do”

One of the most interesting artists around, the aloof Charlie Mars, stopped by and told us the story of this song.  Charlie is known on the Krush for “Meet Me By The Backdoor,” a hit from his 2009 “Like A Bird, Like A Plane” album.  Charlie is also known as the musician boyfriend to actress Mary-Louise Parker.

Ted Russell Camp “A Whole Lotta You and Me”

Ted is working on his new album with the Kickstarter program, taking contributions and support from fans.  This is a new song for this project from the talented singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer.  Ted is familiar to Krush listeners for last year’s hit “California Wildflower,” off his last album “Get Back To The Land.”

Alpha Rev “Stop Tryin’”

From one of Austin, Texas’ best kept secrets, this band is about to break wide.  Very talented, very grounded, lead singer Casey McPherson was one of the most “present” artists I’ve interviewed.  The inspiration for this song, found on their recent EP “City Farm: Roots,” made for a great story and really a life lesson.
